North East Tames Tome School In Girl's Hoops

After opening the season 1-9, the North East Lady Indians reeled off their third straight victory following a 39-14 win at the Tome School.
Playing aggressive defense from the outset, the Indians opened an 8-0 lead to start the game.  They ran the lead to 23-5 at halftime behind the strong play of Lexi Stevens, scoring nine of her 15 points in the first half. Khadijah Perry helped the Indian cause with ten points of her own.
Even with starters sitting on the bench for much of the second half, the Indians racked up 30 rebounds and 17 steals for the game.
Dominique Gelmann and Maddy Olewine led the Tome Titians in scoring with four points a piece. And, while the Lady Titans were outpaced from the beginning by the more experienced North East squad, they played scrappy defense that forced 23 Indian turnovers for the game.

Bo Manor Fights Back At Home To Beat Perryville

If the game had ended at the 6:15 mark in the fourth quarter, the story would have been one of a Perryville Panther comeback on the road against the Bohemia Manor Eagles, but it didn’t. The host Eagles outscored the Panthers 19-4 in the final minutes to defeat the Panthers 65-54.

Led by guard Devon Smith’s 25 points, the Bo Manor squad sprinted out to an early 7-0 lead and extended to an 11-point lead with Perryville standout Gabe Sherrod sitting on the bench.

Sherrod, who scored his 1,000th career point earlier in the week, came of the bench to post a team-high 22 points and lead the charge. Sidelined for much of the season with an ankle injury, tonight was no different for the senior. He played the remainder of the game with a visible limp that clearly hampered his movement and agility.

The Panthers were game and took a four-point lead against Bo Manor early in the fourth quarter. The Eagle’s Smith, who didn’t score in the third quarter, woke up for seven points in the final frame to help put Bo Manor back in the lead for good.

North East Ladies Outpace Bo Manor

The action on the court between the North East Lady Indians and the Bohemia Manor Eagles was physical, but the final score of 38-21 did not reflect that contention.
Indian forward Lexi Stevens dropped 22 points, including all six free throws, to lead all scorers.  Stevens bombed two three-pointers in the first quarter to help the Indians build a 10-4 lead that grew to 19-6 by halftime.

Rising Sun Wrestlers Upend Fallston

Rising Sun made the most of Senior Night as they upended visiting Fallston 42-33 to win their dual-meet and remain undefeated in divisional matches. The Tigers are now 8-2 on the year.
The Tigers rode pins by Weston Lynn (at 126 lbs) and Anthony Cimarosi (at 152 lbs) coupled with an extra two wins by forfeit to secure their nine-point win.  Fallston’s Zach Cullison, a 2011 State Champion Wrestler at 119 pounds, also registered a pin at 132 pounds.

Sherrod Drops 30 To Eclipse 1,000 Point Mark, Lead Panthers Past Tigers

Gabe Sherrod’s 1,000th career point regained the lead for the Perryville Panthers, who were locked in a back and forth battle with the visiting Rising Sun Tigers. Ahead early, the Panthers kept pushing the ball to Sherrod to get him the 26 points he needed to reach the millennium milestone and it almost cost them the game. After the pivotal basket, Sherrod added in four more points to lead all scorer’s with 30. The Panthers closed out Rising Sun with a 67-60 win.  The Panther lead extended into double digits in the third quarter, but Rising Sun's Nick Spangler and Brandon Aro poured in ten points each in the second half to help Tigers claw their way back into the game.
The by-product of Rising Sun’s fight from a deficit to the lead was personal fouls, and lots of them. The Tigers ended the game with 25 fouls, three players with five each and Sherrod dropping twelve of his 30 points on free throws.
The win ended a three-game losing streak for the Panthers and moved them to (5-8) on the season, while the loss moved Rising Sun to a (4-12) record.

"As You Like It" Opens At Milburn Stone January 27th

Director Marshall B Garrett works on building the "Tree of Life" for Milburn Stone's upcoming production. (all photos - Scott Serio/Cecil Scene)

Building a stage production is kind of like building the “Tree of Life” for the set of the upcoming production of William Shakespeare’s "As You Like It" at the Milburn Stone Theatre. Initially, you have no idea if the pieces that are being put together will look like anything, then, you look up and wonder how it happened.
Such is the case for the fourth show at Milburn Stone for director Marshall B Garrett. The 25 year-old Theatre Arts graduate from Illinois Wesleyan University has two more productions in the works, but last Sunday, making that Tree of Life come to life was foremost in his mind.
“All Shakespeare is made to be performed on an empty stage,” said Garrett.  But then, he says, he started thinking about all the elements of "As You Like It", the Eden imagery, the Tree of Life and the return to innocence and an idea started to form.
He said, “I was just thinking out loud and wondered, ‘What if they had a big tree they could climb all over, what would that be like?’”  The Tree of Life will be a focal point for much of the second half of the Shakespeare production.
Here is what Milburn Stone has to say about "As You Like It" in their press release:
Considered by many to be Shakespeare’s greatest romantic comedy, “As You Like It” will be presented in the Milburn Stone Theatre on Cecil College’s North East campus Jan. 27, 28 and 29 and Feb. 3, 4 and 5. Incorporating issues of banishment, cross dressing, a clever clown, and escape into the forest from an evil Duke, “As You Like It” becomes a sort of “greatest hits” piece with elements from “Twelfth Night,” “Two Gentlemen of Verona,” “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” Introducing professional actress Carly Stocking as Rosalind, the daughter of the banished duke is in turn banished to the forest, where she decides to dress as a man to avoid potential attackers. Luckily, her wooer, Orlando, played by Russell Matthews; also escapes into the same forest from his scheming older brother. Great love and mistaken identity converge when Orlando meets Rosalind’s male alter ego “Ganymede,” and asks to be taught how to win the love of Rosalind. Additional love stories abound throughout the story, and Rosalind’s banished father oversees all in the magical Forest of Arden.
This promises to be an excellent chance for Cecil County residents to see a top-flight Shakespeare production close to home without the $150+ sticker shock of a Broadway show.
The show begins at 8pm on January 27th, 28th, February 3rd and 4th, and has a 3 p.m. matinee show on both Jan. 29 and Feb. 5. Tickets, which are $18 for adults, $15 for students/seniors, $10 for children 12 and younger, and $5 for college students with a valid ID, can be purchased by phone at 410-287-1037, at the Milburn Stone Theatre box office, or online at www.milburnstone.org. The box office, located at One Seahawk Drive at Cecil College in North East, Md., is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Animal Kingdom Brings Eclipse Award Back To Cecil County

Animal Kingdom might be vacationing in Florida right now, but when the four year-old colt returns to his home at Fair Hill later this Spring, it will be as an Eclipse Award winner.
The Eclipse win was also the first for his trainer, Graham Motion, who is headquartered at Fair Hill and is a Cecil County resident.
The win confirmed what many people already know about Fair Hill - It is home to tons of great thoroughbred race horses like Animal Kingdom, and other Eclipse hopeful Union Rags. Fair Hill is more than just horses though.
To many Cecil County residents, Fair Hill is simply home to the Cecil County Fair. If they get to experience FHNRMA, they see a few acres covered with amusement rides and maybe wander over to see the Three Hills Rodeo. What they don't see, or know very much about, is the other 5600-plus acres that comprise Fair Hill.
Fair Hill is also home to hiking trails, fishing, camping, Junior Ranger programs, hunting, kayaking, several annual equestrian events, the Fair Hill Steeplechase races and the Fair Hill International.
And, right now, Fair Hill is home to 2011 Champion Three Year-Old and Eclipse Award winner Animal Kingdom.

Cecil "Residents" Up For Eclipse Awards

There will be a slight lack of sports coverage over the next couple days as Cecil Scene goes on the road. We are heading to California for the Eclipse Awards.
The main reason to go is that Eclipse Sportswire photographer Bob Mayberger won the 2011 award for horse racing photography. But, while we are there, we will provide some coverage about Cecil County "residents" Union Rags, Animal Kingdom and Team Valor Stables.
For those of you who don't know, Cecil County is rich in thoroughbred racing history and just happens to be home to one of the premier training facilities for race horses. The Fair Hill Training Center is home to hundreds of thoroughbreds in training, but this week the focus is on Union Rags, Animal Kingdom and Team Valor.
Both of these horses and Team Valor are leading candidates to win their own awards. The Eclipse Awards are given annually for outstanding performance by horses, trainers, jockeys and owners. For horses racing in North America, these are the highest honor possible. Winning an Eclipse Award can propel a jockey's career forward, can increase the stud fee for  future stallion and can provide prestige (and potential clients) for trainers and ownership consortia. It is a pretty big deal.
And, yes, there are Media Eclipse Awards and they are given at the same ceremony. Here is a little primer if you just jumped in at the quarter-pole and have no idea who anyone is.

Let's start with Union Rags. Until the year-end racing championship for two year-olds in the Breeders' Cup, Union Rags was undefeated. The juvenile colt overcame a bad start and traffic trouble to finish a fast-closing second place to winner Hansen.  Union Rags is headquarted at Fair Hill in the barn of trainer Michael Matz.  As with Animal Kingdom, he is temporarily in the sunny climes of Florida to start of his 2012 racing campaign, but home is Fair Hill. Union Rags is nominated as Champion Juvenile

Now, Animal Kingdom. If not for some bad racing luck, he could have won horse racing's Triple Crown. There is a reason no horse has done it since Affirmed in 1978 - it is a tough feat.  That said, Animal Kingdom won the 2011 Kentucky Derby, bringing owner Team Valor and trainer Graham Motion their first Derby wins.  Animal Kingdom then had to overcome several factors in the Preakness, but his hard-charging second place finish wasn't enough to overtake eventual winner Shackleford.  Animal Kingdom was then injured in the Belmont Stakes and his racing season was over for 2011. AK is nominated as Champion Three Year Old.

Team Valor owns Animal Kingdom.  The elite racing partnership is the brainchild of racing-writer-turned-Derby-winner Barry Irwin.  After the 2010 racing season concluded, he made the bold move of putting all U.S.-based horses owned by Team Valor under the tutelage of trainer Graham Motion. Irwin liked the remote training center environment offered by Fair Hill and he like Motion's style of training. Team Valor bought a vacant barn, updated it, upgraded it and Cecil County picked up more than twenty new equine residents. Team Valor is nominated as top owner.

Please follow our coverage. Maybe some Cecil County residents can bring home some prestigious hardware from today's award ceremony at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel. Wish 'em luck.

It's Tebow Time In Tiger Country

It was "Tebow-Time" at center court after the Rising Sun Tigers fought through a double-digit deficit to score a 59-54 win against the North East Indians.
The exchanges between Tiger and Indian faithful throughout the game was heated.  After Rising Sun had completed their comeback, students stormed the floor and and met at center court.
Tiger guard Andre Moore led all scorers with 23 points, hitting three three-pointers early and knocking down 10 out of 11 free throws in the final quarter.
North East senior guard Kendall Danglade scored 21 points to lead the visiting Indians.

Elkton Routs Rising Sun 83-64 On The Road

Three numbers tell the story of the Elkton’s defeat of Rising Sun High School in boy basketball on Monday night – 83, 64 and 51.
The first number is Elkton’s score, the second is Rising Sun’s score and the final number is the total number of fouls for both teams. Add in a several technical fouls on both sides and you get an idea how heated this matchup of Cecil County rivals was.
Elkton built an early lead and spread the scoring around, with each scorer tallying six points in the second quarter. The Golden Elks went into halftime ahead of the Tigers 50-22.
Rising Sun Tiger guard Andre Moore led all scorers with 26 points, but 26 team fouls and 2 technical fouls made overcoming the Golden Elk lead nearly impossible. Ramiell Taylor led Elkton in scoring with 21 points.

Sixteen Schools Meet At Bohemia Manor For 16th Wrestling Invitational

The weekend of the Battle at the Bridge Invitational is a big one for Cecil County high school wrestling. Dozens of wrestlers, representing sixteen schools, from as far away as Virginia and New Jersey converged on host Bohemia Manor High School in Chesapeake City this Friday and Saturday to compete.
The tournament, in its 16th Edition, offered a chance for the five schools from Cecil County to test their mettle against these rival schools.
Many local wrestlers made it through pool play with a chance to vie for a meet championship, but no match was more anticipated or heated than the semi-final pairing of Elkton's Timmy Taylor and Rising Sun's Joe Jurgans.  Before a packed field house at Bohemia Manor, Jurgans tallied early takedowns and reversals to open up a large lead and came away with the win against the previosuly undefeated Taylor.
In the slideshow below are scenes from throughout the day at Bo Manor. Enjoy.

North East Leads Gate-To-Wire To Defeat Perryville

The North East Indians came out of the gate scoring eight unanswered points against cross-county rival Perryville and never looked back. They extended their lead to 21-2 and were never headed by the Panther squad.
The Indians were led by Brandon Smith scoring 19 points on the game and leading all scorers. Guard Kendall Danglade added nine points. The Perryville Panthers were led by Tyrelle Hollingsworth who scored 16 points.

What goes into to deciding which photos to run?

Should we run the photo or not? That is the question many a photo editor has asked, and the answer is never really the same. Some people believe, no matter what, you run a great photo – no matter the content. In bigger markets covering professional sports, this may be true.
But now, take a look at the decision Cecil Scene had last night. The North East Lady Indians had clawed their way back into contention against the Rising Sun Tigers from a 12-point deficit. The Lady Indians fought hard in overtime as well, but ultimately the Lady Tigers prevailed.
The teams shook hands at half court, the referees packed up and left, the fans filed out of the gymnasium and in a moment of “this is last call” that you might see at a bar, the lights went out. There were a couple dozen people still in the gym.
Then I noticed a North East High School player sitting there alone. She was obviously in the middle of packing up to leave when the emotion of the hard-fought loss hit her. Her basketball shoes were sitting there beneath her as she held her head in her hands and cried.
In what was pretty much darkness, I scrambled to get my camera up, winged it on setting what might get me a frame of the moment and made one photo before it was all over. The player got up, shoes in hand and walked off the court.
Now, what to do with this image.  I knew it was of North East guard Heniyah Cannady. But, this wasn’t a pro athlete I had photographed, it was a high school student who had just laid her heart and soul out on the basketball court for 36 minutes. Do I run this photo as part of out coverage or not. Will she like the photo or hate it. You just never know. If she hated the photo, to me, it just didn't feel right to run the image. And, of course, there was just no way to know.
There was also a bigger question for Cecil Scene. We are still getting going. This is a website for the community, about the community and run by someone who lives in the community. Is this the statement we wanted to make about Cecil Scene?
We held the photo after much conversation and decided to err on the side of caution.
Heading into tonight’s boy’s game at North East I ran into Varsity Girls basketball Coach Alan Foskey and told him about the image. As luck would have it, the first person he ran into going into the gym was Ms. Cannady. Moments later she ran up to me in the stands as I was setting up. She wanted to see the photo. I pulled it up on my cell phone and showed it to her.
She loved it, and here it is. But, more thought went into making this photo live on the web then just hitting Publish.

Lady Tiger's Defeat Lady Indian's In Overtime

The pressure of full-court and half-court presses didn’t keep the North East Indians from erasing the host Rising Sun Tigers 12-point lead in regulation, but it did lead to a 53-49 win in overtime for the Lady Tigers.
The second half charge from a double-digit deficit to a briefly held  lead was capped by an Emily Hammer jump shot in the final minutes. The jubilation didn’t last, as the Lady Tiger’s pounced on turnovers to force overtime.
Led by senior Heather Lesniowski’s 15 points, the Lady Tiger’s jumped out to a quick lead in overtime and survived for the  4-point win.  The loss dropped the Indians to a 1-5 record, while the win moved the Tigers to a 4-3 record.
