Don't You Wanna Do-Si-Do?

     Those Do-Si-Dos, Samoas and Thin Mints do more than just sate your sweet-tooth cravings, they work to finance much of the ongoing education and enrichment the Girl Scouts of America provides for young girls.  It is that time of year, Girl Scout cookie time. So, the next time you drive up to a local Walmart or Royal Farm Store and see these young ladies out there braving the cold, ponder why they are out there.

     It is fitting that this year is the 100^th Anniversary for the Girl Scouts. Since the day Girl Scouts Founder Juliette Gordon Low called a distant cousin and said, "I've got something for the girls of Savannah, and all of America, and all the world, and we're going to start it tonight,” more than 50 millions young ladies have participated in the Girl Scouts.

     One might need to stop a take a breath trying to recite all the goals for the Girl Scout organization – To empower girls and to help teach values such as honesty, fairness, courage, compassion, character, sisterhood, confidence, and citizenship through activities including camping and community service. Some of that isn't cheap.

     The ranks of “Former Girl Scout” are filled with successful women, including astronauts, actresses, senators, two First Ladies, athletes, executives, magazine editors and news anchors. Much of the foundation of these women was based on those $4 boxes of cookies.

     These girls are everywhere in their green vests. One will probably look like and over-sized cookie. All of them will have hand warmers in their pockets. Rising Sun Comeback Falls Short At Buzzer, Bo Manor Wins 70-68

     Rising Sun Tiger senior guard Andre Moore raced the length of the court with 5.3 seconds left, stopped just outside the three-point line and jumped to launch the shot that would complete a 17-point comeback against the Bohemia Manor Eagles at home on Senior Night. It wasn’t meant to be. Bo Manor defeated Rising Sun 70-68.

  Eagle Devon Smith trailed Moore and caught up with him just in time to block the potentially game-winning shot cleanly. Smith also led all scorers with 25 points on the night.

     Things were looking grim for the Tigers early. Their deficit peaked at 17 points twice and it appeared they might get trounced on their home court on Senior Night. Taking a page from Bohemia Manor, Rising Sun employed a full court press and half-court trap and starting slowly chipping away at the Eagle lead.

     Mostly behind the play of leading scorer Nolan Forrest, who knocked down three three-pointers in the third period, Rising Sun was able to cut 14 points off the Bo Manor  lead from the 6:45 mark to the end of third frame. Forrest scored 23 for the game.

Cecil Scene Player of the Week #4 Opened For Voting

Elkton Presses Way To 79-52 Win Against Visiting Perryville

     There was no doubt what the game plan for the host Elkton Golden Elks against the visiting Perryville Panthers. Press. Press early, press often and double-team Panther Gabe Sherrod. It worked.  The Golden Elks routed the Panthers 79-52.

     The constant pressure from the outset led to sloppy play on both ends of the court. The first points weren’t scored until three minutes into the game. After that, the Elkton press led to turnover after turnover and the Elks built an insurmountable lead. At the half, Elkton held a 32-19 lead.

     Elkton’s Sterling Cruz led the team with 15 points, but there were four Elks who made it into double-digits.  Perryville’s Gabe Sherrod led all scorers with 20 points.

    The constant pressure by the Golden Elks led to some tense moments during the game, words were exchanged and ended with Elkton getting slapped with a technical foul.  By that point, the decision for Elkton was well in hand, moving them to an 18-2 record, while dropping Perryville to 6-12.

Seahawks Hit Century Mark, Rout Visiting Germantown

     Cecil College opened their game knocking down back-to-back three-pointers  against Montgomery-Germantown and never looked back.  With six players in double-digits and a dozen three-pointers, the Seahawks routed the visiting Gryphons 100-84. 

     The Seahawks went into halftime with a 48-33 lead. On the offensive end of the court they buried seven treys. On the defensive end of the court, the press was relentless, forcing numerous turnovers.

  Cecil College coasted through the second half, giving many starters a rest, while still securing a commanding victory to move to 20-4 on the season.

Cecil College Takes Two On Home Court

     Cecil College basketball has a very good day on their home court with both the Men’s and Women’s teams defeating visiting Baltimore City Community College squads.

     The women evened their record at 10-10 with a 64-49 wire-to-wire win. The men then fought through a seesaw battle to earn a 78-72 victory that will surely help their #13 National Ranking in Division II Junior College polls. The victory pushed the Seahawks to 19-4 for the season.

     The men’s team is poised to make their fourth straight trip to the National Championship. The Seahawks won the championship in 2006 and have made several Elite Eight appearances in recent years.

     The ladies led off action at the Cecil College Athletic Complex. In spite of aggressive defense on the part of the BCCC Lady Panthers that resulted in 19 turnovers for the game, the result never looked in doubt.  The Lady Seahawks held a double-digit lead throughout. Mid-way through the second half, BCCC managed to cut the lead to ten, but the Seahawks rebuffed that charge and pulled away for the win.

     From the tip-off the men’s game was a physical battle. The first half was marked by numerous lead changes with BCCC grabbing a 37-36 halftime lead on a buzzer beating 3-pointer.

   The Panthers came out fast in the second half and opened up a seven-point lead. The Seahawks found their footing, buried a three-pointer, made a steal and quickly erased the deficit.

     After forcing the Panthers to take a timeout to stop the Seahawk run, the Cecil squad never relinquished the lead.  The Seahawks continued to play scrappy ball, coming away with several offensive rebounds and collecting loose balls. Cecil closed out BCCC late for the six-point victory.

Panthers Outlast Indians For Perryville Win

     It was Cecil County theater on a Friday night, only it was high school basketball in Perryville. The North East Indians has just missed another free throw in the final frame, the Perryville Panthers were up by four points, the clock was under ten seconds and the win was sealed. Then Perryville was slapped with a technical foul, giving the Indians two free throws and the possession.

     The good fortune was all for naught. North East only sank one free throw and, shortly after the inbound pass, Indian Kendall Danglade was forced to step out of bounds. North East never had the chance to put up a game-tying three-point attempt.

     The North East squad missed three free throws in the final period, and that would be the difference in their 63-60 loss to Perryville.

     The Indians jumped out to an early lead with two three-pointers the first period and extended their lead to eight points. It seemed as if having leading scorer Gabe Sherrod on the bench in street clothes might be too much to overcome for Perryville.

     Panther Brian Matthews led all scorers with 17 points. His seven buckets and three free throws in Sherrod’s absence pushed the Perryville to close the gap for good with four minutes left in the game.

     Kendall Danglade and Maurice Dickey each dropped 16 points to lead the visiting North East Indians.
